Diva’s Christmas Carol
No Description Available. Genre: ChristmasRating: PGRelease Date: 7-MAR-2006Media Type: DVDA new twist on an old classic, this VH1 production may not look like the Dickens favorite with Alistair Sim, but it’s true to its spirit. Vanessa Williams is “Ebony Scrooge,” a miserly Diana Ross-type singer. She was once part of 1980s trio Desire, but Marli Jacob (TLC’s Chilli) was killed in a car crash and Ebony abandoned Terry for a solo career. While in New York for a “charity” concert–designed to benefit her more than anyone else–Ebony is visited by four spirits. First comes Marli, followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Suddenly Susan’s Kathy Griffin), Present (Duran Duran’s John Taylor), and Future. The last is a tragically humorous episode of Behind the Music, featuring cameos by Nile Rodgers and Brian McKnight. It’s enough to make a diva change her wicked ways–some of them, at any rate. Williams sings several songs, notably “Sleigh Ride” and “Heartquake. ” –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Vanessa Williams just doesn’t have it when it comes to singing. . . . period.

I received the wrong DVD in the right case. When I notified the seller, they did give a full refund but said they could not find the correct movie.

I love Vanessa Williams and I love Christmas. Unfortunately, this take on the classic Christmas Carol is weak. What gives it 4 stars according to me is the sexy Vanessa. But I digress. It is your basic “grinch” with a black heart and no need of Christmas turned into a loving and caring person who sees the true meaning of Christmas. Vanessa plays a musical diva who has turned her back on the people she truely cares about including her first musical partner, played by Chili of TLC, and her neice. Chili, who is good as a female version of Jacob Marley (she is Marley Jacobs), comes back to tell her you will be visited by three ghosts. . . (you get the story). In this version, Marley has regretted the lifestyle she used to live. She is killed in a car accident and punishes Vanessa for not being there when she needed. The story moves on and Vanessa, at some points, shines. I loved the scene between her and the ghost of Christmas past, played by Kathy Griffith. Then as a more interesting take on the present, the ghost is a womanizing John Taylor of Duran Duran fame. But I think the ultimate twist on this story was the ghost of Christmas future. It was not a person but. . . if you have not seen the movie-go see it. I won’t spoil it for anyone. But you will like it. There is even a nice little flash back to the decade I wish I could forget: the 80’s. Overall the story was standard and the acting was a little too robotic. Vanessa was as beautiful as ever and her timing was great. I hope to see more of her in other movies. Interesting twist to a treasured story.

A twist on a Classic: This is a wonderful movie (quality and all) that has a beautiful message attached not to spoil the movie but once you have seen this it will become very clear what life is all about. Given that this story is one that is very near and dear to me, I must say that this is a powerful movie and the information that is presented is one that will not be forgotten.
